THE ZOMBIES WINTER TOUR 2016
WINTER TOUR 2016
‘Iconic 60’s legends The Zombies, back on the road with a special homecoming concert at St Albans Cathedral, a guest performance at BBC London’s Children In Need Fundraiser & Vintage Tv’s Electric Dreams Weekender’
An extensive global tour, performances over two consecutive years at Glastonbury, appearances on Jools Holland, The Great Escape Festival and 6 Music firmly placed The Zombies on everyone’s Spotify playlists last year, with young and old, newcomers and fans alike celebrating a musical British institution. Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone, once hailed in the USA as leaders of the British Invasion are as quintessential and immensely enjoyable as a great big bowl of glorious Eton Mess.
The Zombies infiltrated the airwaves with sophisticated melodies, high hitting vocals, choral back-up harmonies and jazzy keyboard riffs with their 1960’s hit singles like “She’s Not There” and “Tell Her No”. Ironically, the group broke-up in 1968 just prior to achieving their greatest success – the chart-topping single “Time of the Season”, from their swan-song album “Odessey & Oracle” (recently ranked by Mojo, NME and Rolling Stone in their “Greatest Albums of All Time” lists) In the intervening years, while lead singer Colin Blunstone went on to develop an acclaimed solo career (“Say You Don’t Mind”, “Misty Roses”), and keyboardist/songwriter Rod Argent rocked ‘70’s arenas with his eponymous band ARGENT (“Hold Your Head Up”), the legend of The Zombies took on a life of its own. Generations of new bands have cited The Zombies’ work as pop touchstones, including such artists as; Neko Case and Nick Cave (who have recorded “She’s Not There” for the popular HBO series True Blood), Paul Weller, The Vaccines, She & Him, Beck, Belle and Sebastian, The Black Angels, The Fleet Foxes, Beach House, The Temples and The Beautiful South.
Blunstone and Argent reunited in 2000 with a new Zombies line-up, which came full circle in October 2015 with the critically acclaimed release of “Still Got That Hunger”, bringing the band back to the Billboard Magazine charts 50 years after their first singles. Their music continues to resonate today, whether being uniquely covered by Eminem on last year’s “Marshall Mathers LP 2”, or providing a haunting backdrop for Coco Chanel’s world-wide campaign with Keira Knightley.
The tour starts on October 21st with Colin Blunstone & Rod Argent of The Zombies performing a special homecoming concert at St Albans Cathedral. A rare acoustic piano and vocal performance by The Zombies’ founders, first experienced last year at a sell out show in London’s Union Chapel will be performed within the hallowed Nave of St Albans Cathedral. Joined by a guest string quintet, this intimate evening of music will span the iconic musicians’ 5-decade careers, which originated in the historic city of St Albans.
St Albans looms large in The Zombies’ story…from the Blacksmith’s Arms Pub, where the five St Albans students first met to form a band…to the Cathedral itself, where keyboardist/songwriter Rod Argent began his musical career as a boy chorister. With its stunning 11th Century Norman architecture, The Cathedral is the centerpiece of St Albans.
Taking in a further 7 dates, with Tour support from Fred Abbot (Noah & The Whale) the band will venture to Wales, Scotland, Newbury, Bath and Eastleigh. The tour will take in BBC London’s Children in Need event on 18th November and culminate in a sparkling, frosty Xmas shindig at Butlins, Bognor Regis on December 3rd. The gents will then be taking a break for the festive season, before some exciting news to be announced in 2017!
